Working with James Dombrowski and Don West, Horton founded the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee in 1932. Highlander offered leadership training for the Appalachian labor movement in the 1930s and 1940s, before turning to civil rights and desegregation. Myles Horton worked with and inspired leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Ralph Abernathy, and many others.
