Mohandas Gandhi was trained as a lawyer in South Africa. When he encountered governmental oppression there, and later in his native India, he demonstrated — through leading non-violent protest based on adherence-in-action to First Amendment principles — that truth and peace were ultimately stronger and more inclusive forces for achieving a just and civilized society than one-sided armed repression and unequal laws. His wise and patient model for change has since been followed by many.
